12 fishing spots less than an hour from Bordeaux: the complete guide

The Gironde is a blessed département for anglers: a tidal river, two large rivers, the biggest natural lakes in France, dozens of ponds and a few well-preserved private lakes. All within an hour of Bordeaux. We have been fishing here for years — on our own lake and on the public waters around it — and here, plainly, are the 12 spots worth the trip, with the species, access, season and what you need to know before you go.

1. The Domaine du Dahu private lake – Sablons (40 min)

A 3-hectare private lake in the heart of a wooded estate between Libourne and Coutras. No fishing pressure, no crowds on the banks: the number of anglers is limited each day to protect the quality of the fishing. You will find mirror and common carp, pike, zander, black bass and perch, on compulsory catch and release — which explains the size of the fish: pike over a metre are caught every season, zander regularly exceed 60 cm, and the lake is home to a sturgeon estimated at over 90 kg and 1.80 m (Decathlon Fishing estimate), the most impressive fish in the area.

Black bass are the lake's other star: one regular counted 35 in a single day from a float tube in September 2026 (see his message below). Guests of the floating chalets have one more privilege: night fishing is allowed from the terrace of their chalet — which is when the best zander come out.

This is the only spot on this list where you do not need a fishing licence: the lake is enclosed water, federal regulations do not apply. And it is also the only one where you can sleep on the water and fish from the terrace of your floating chalet (see below).

2. The Dordogne – Branne to Castillon-la-Bataille (40-50 min)

Between Branne and Castillon, the Dordogne is wide, slow and deep, with holes that shelter very large catfish and fine zander. It is a stretch for float tube, boat or bank fishing from the many access points (the ports of Branne, Génissac, Castillon). Perch hunt along the edges in summer, pike hold in the backwaters.

Good to know: the Dordogne is tidal as far as Castillon. Level and current change within hours, and the tidal bore travels up to Saint-Pardon on spring tides. Fish the rising tide or slack water. Fishing licence required (2nd category).

3. The Isle – Coutras to Libourne (35 min)

The Isle, a tributary of the Dordogne, flows 10 minutes from Domaine du Dahu. A more intimate river with shaded banks, perfect for coarse fishing (roach, bream, chub, bleak) and for predators on lures around bridge piers, weirs and mills — pike and perch above all. Easy access at Coutras, Guîtres, Saint-Denis-de-Pile and Libourne. Ideal for introducing children. Fishing licence required.

4. Les Dagueys lake – Libourne (30 min)

A former gravel pit turned leisure park, this well-kept municipal lake is the most accessible carp spot around Libourne: open banks, nearby car parks, plenty of swims. Coarse fish in quantity. The site also has a watersports centre and a supervised beach in summer — handy for keeping the rest of the family busy during your session. Fishing licence required (Libourne AAPPMA).

5. The Garonne in Bordeaux – the quays (0 min)

Easily forgotten, but you can fish at the foot of the Pont de Pierre. The Garonne in Bordeaux is a tidal river with silty water, the realm of the catfish (fish over 2 m are taken every year) and of the zander fished vertically from a boat. Mullet are everywhere. Difficult fishing from the quays on either bank, for anglers who know the tides: the current is powerful and the level varies by several metres. Fishing licence required.

6. Bordeaux Lake – Bordeaux-Lac (15 min)

The large artificial lake north of the city is a surprising urban spot: good-sized carp, black bass and pike along the rock armour and weed beds. Some areas are reserved for watersports and swimming, check which sectors allow fishing. Perfect for a short session after work. Fishing licence required.

7. Lake Lacanau (1h)

2,000 hectares of clear water bordered by pines and reed beds. Lacanau is the black bass and pike spot of the Gironde coast: the weed beds of the eastern shore and the shallows at the south of the lake are ideal for topwater lures and Texas rigs in summer. Zander and perch in the depths. A boat (dinghy, float tube, kayak) changes everything: the accessible banks are soon fished out. Launch ramps at Le Moutchic and Longarisse. Fishing licence required.

8. Lake Carcans-Hourtin – Médoc (1h)

The largest natural freshwater lake in France (nearly 6,000 ha). A legendary spot for predators: pike, zander and perch in quantity, with trophy fish every season. The surface is immense and the wind gets up quickly in the afternoon — boat recommended, early morning start. Launch ramps at Carcans-Maubuisson, Hourtin-Port and Piqueyrot. Fishing licence required.

9. Lake Cazaux-Sanguinet (1h)

South of the Arcachon basin, this large lake straddling the Gironde and the Landes offers crystal-clear water and sandy bottoms. Pike, zander, perch and black bass hold near the weed beds and drop-offs. Bank fishing possible on the Cazaux side, but a boat remains the key. Fishing licence required (note: check reciprocity between départements depending on the shore).

10. The Ciron – South Gironde (1h)

The only 1st category spot on this list. The Ciron is a cool-water river winding beneath a gallery forest between Villandraut and Barsac. You fish wild brown trout on the fly, with natural bait or small lures, in a setting that rivals any mountain stream. Open season from mid-March to mid-September. Fishing licence required, some stretches are private: respect the signs.

11. Blasimon leisure lake – Entre-deux-Mers (55 min)

A peaceful pond among the vines, a stone's throw from a Romanesque abbey. Carp, roach, tench for relaxed coarse or carp fishing with the family, with a picnic area and swimming in summer. Nothing spectacular, but a charming setting and comfortable swims. Fishing licence required.

12. The Garonne lateral canal – Castets-en-Dorthe (55 min)

Where the canal meets the Garonne, you fish a calm, current-free canal with flat banks accessible by bike. Perch and zander on lures along the sheet piling and locks, roach and carp on the pole. An excellent winter spot when the rivers are in flood. Fishing licence required.

Regulations: where do you need a fishing licence?

In France the rule is simple: as soon as you fish in public water — river, canal, natural lake, any body of water connected to a watercourse — you must hold a fishing licence (carte de pêche) issued by an approved association (AAPPMA). It can be bought online at cartedepeche.fr or from local outlets, for the year, the week or the day. It funds habitat maintenance and stocking. Eleven of the twelve spots in this guide fall into this category.

The exception is enclosed water: private lakes with no connection to the river network. The owner sets the rules and no federal licence is required. This is the case for the Domaine du Dahu lake: you book your day, you come, you fish. In return we apply our own rules — compulsory catch and release, barbless hooks recommended, unhooking mat for carp, limited number of anglers — so that the lake stays what it is.

A few reminders valid everywhere in public waters: respect minimum sizes (pike 60 cm, zander 50 cm, black bass 30 cm in the Gironde), the closed seasons for predators, the number of rods allowed (4 in 2nd category), and the ban on fishing from bridges and locks. Dates and sizes are set each year by prefectoral order: check them before the season.

Calendar: which species in which season?

In short: spring for carp and trout, summer for black bass, catfish and perch frenzies, autumn for pike and zander, winter for perch, vertical zander and quiet carp on enclosed water. On the Domaine du Dahu lake, autumn is the regulars' favourite season: mist on the water at daybreak, pike in full activity and chalets by the fire in the evening.

Do I need a fishing licence to fish at Domaine du Dahu? +

No. The Domaine du Dahu lake is a private body of water classed as enclosed water: no federal fishing licence is required. You book your day (€98 for 2 anglers, included for floating-chalet guests) and you fish. Catch and release is however compulsory.

Where can I fish without a licence near Bordeaux? +

Only private lakes (enclosed waters) allow fishing without a licence. The 3-hectare private lake at Domaine du Dahu in Sablons, 40 minutes from Bordeaux, is one of them. All rivers, natural lakes and municipal lakes in the Gironde require a fishing licence.

What is the best carp spot around Bordeaux? +

For quiet carp fishing with no pressure and big fish, the Domaine du Dahu private lake is the reference: mirror and common carp on catch and release, limited number of anglers each day. In public waters, Les Dagueys lake in Libourne and the Blasimon leisure lake are good choices.

Can I stay on site and fish from my accommodation? +

Yes, that is what makes Domaine du Dahu special: the floating chalets are moored on the lake and have a private terrace over the water. You fish from your terrace at sunrise without leaving the chalet, and night fishing is allowed for chalet guests. Can you fish in the Gironde in winter? +

Yes for carp, perch and coarse fish. Pike and zander are closed from late January to late April in 2nd category public waters. On the Domaine du Dahu private lake there is no legal closure: fishing is by reservation according to the estate's calendar.

Can you fish at night at Domaine du Dahu? +

Night fishing is reserved for guests sleeping in a floating chalet: they fish from their private terrace, on the lake, at any hour, included in their stay. It is the best way to catch the lake's big zander. For day visitors without a stay, day fishing (€98 for 2 anglers) runs from 9.30am to 6pm.

Is the Domaine du Dahu lake suitable for children and beginners? +

Yes. The lake is calm, the banks are safe and fishing is by the day (9.30am-6pm). Children under 10 pay €15, non-fishing companions €25. We do not rent tackle: bring your own rods.
